Starting Solids: My Favorite First Foods for Baby (not your usual list!)
Share
Introducing solids is such an exciting milestone! When it was time to start feeding Izzy, I wanted to offer her nutrient-dense foods that would support her gut’s development. I chose foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats to give her the best possible start. Here are some of my favorite first foods, and why they made it onto the list:
- Bone Broth
Bone broth is packed with collagen, minerals, and amino acids, all of which are great for building strong bones and supporting gut health. It’s an easy one for babies to digest.
- Bones
Handing babies a large bone (like a chicken drumstick bone with the meat mostly removed) helps develop chewing skills and introduces them to more flavors. Chewing on bones promotes the development of strong jaw muscles and supports healthy facial development, which is essential for speech and eating skills. Bones are also packed with so many nutrients!
- Egg Yolks
Egg yolks are full of healthy fats, cholesterol (which babies need for brain development), and essential nutrients like choline, vitamin D, and B vitamins. I always made sure to cook the yolk until soft but still runny so as to not overheat the yolk.
- Liver
Liver might sound unusual, but it’s a powerhouse of nutrition. It’s rich in iron, vitamin A, and other key nutrients that support healthy brain development and immune function. I’d grate a little it with a little broth or egg yolk. Baby does not need much to get a ton of nutrients from it!
- Meat Sticks
Soft, easy-to-hold meat sticks are great for babies learning to self-feed, think strips of steak. They’re packed with protein and healthy fats, and they give babies a chance to practice chewing and other oral motor skills.
